This is Uncle Tom who appears
in DeSmet in "These Happy Golden Years" to tell the story of the expedition to the Black Hills. The
story he told was recorded by a woman on the trip, Annie B. Tallent. She
wrote a book about the adventure titled "THE BLACK HILLS; or, The Last
Hunting Ground of the Dakotahs" published in 1899. Copies are available
from ABEBOOKS.com, just click "Find Book". Laura describes
Uncle Tom Quiner as, "...a small, quiet man with a gentle smile...
Although he was so small and soft-spoken, he had bossed the rough men and
handled the dangerous log drives fearlessly... he had plunged in among the
floating logs of a drive and... dragged an injured man from the river to
safety." |
 |
|
 |
Though written differently in "On the
Shores of Silver Lake", in her memoirs Laura says they took a swan' skin
and "sent in to Uncle Tom Quiner to be made into a swan's down coat for
his baby Helen." |

Genealogical Note: When
searching families, look to the middle names of children for clues as to
the maiden name of their mother--it was common to use the mother's maiden
name as a middle name. In the Wilders, this is the case with the names
Paine and Gould. These names then sometimes migrate through the
generations to become first names. Also look to the oldest male child's
first name as being very likely being the same as that of the mother's father. |
