Eugene August WALDVOGAL [Parents] was born 11 Aug 1868 in Rock Elm, Wisconsin. He died 24 Dec 1945. Eugene married Mary S HARMON. He was related to his father, Hiram Forbes, by adoption and to his mother by birth.

Eugene is the cousin who scared Laura at night in "On the Shores of Silver Lake." I tried to find what happened to Eugene later in life but was unable to find him in available records or the 1920 or 1930 censuses. The death date is from a LDS family file. Added January 29, 2004: I found Eugene in the 1900 census for Dakota County, Nebraska living right next door to his sister Lena. He was married to Mary L., b. Oct. 1879 in Michigan. They had three children at this time: son Earl E., b. Dec 1894; son William M., b. Dec. 1896 (? date illegible); and daughter Velma, b. Jan. 1898.

Saumel Aughley HEIKES was born 16 Aug 1863 in Miffleton, Pennsylvania. He died 27 Apr 1947. Saumel married Lena Evelyn WALDVOGAL on 29 Aug 1888 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Lena Evelyn WALDVOGAL [Parents] was born 7 Nov 1866 in Rock Elm, Wisconsin. She died 13 Jun 1943. Lena married Saumel Aughley HEIKES on 29 Aug 1888 in Sioux City, Iowa. She was related to her father, Hiram Forbes, by adoption and to her mother by birth.

Lena and Eugene are the two cousins Laura rode the black ponies with in "On the Shores of Silver Lake." Lena is the cousin Laura rode the black ponies with in "On the Shores of Silver Lake," and spent time with, singing and milking cows. Their first father, their birth father, had been sent to prison for killing a man who had broken into their home and Laura Ladocia divorced him, remarrying to Hiram Forbes. I don't think Lena and Eugene were formally adopted by Hiram Forbes--legal details such as that being somewhat more rare then. Lena seems to have had a good life, marrying at about the same age as Laura did. She may have lost one child at a young age in Iowa (Updated January 29, 2004: see children's notes below), but had six others. She spent most of her life with her husband on a farm in Nebraska. Laura described her, "Her eyes were as black and snappy, her hair was black as black can be, and it curled naturally." In "On the Shores of Silver Lake" Laura identifies them as "Lena and Jean" and says they were Hiram Forbes children, not Docia's; that Hiram was a widower. This does not appear to be correct. The revisions may have been to avoid mention of Docia's divorce. In her memoirs, Laura names them "Lena and Gene," but names Docia as "Docia Holmes." Census: 1900 census in Dakota County, Nebraska with four children, Agnes, Marion, Eugene, and Samuel 1910 census with all seven children still at home 1920 living in Dakota County, Nebraska, farming. Three children living at home (Lola, Warren, Arnaldine).
