 BIOGRAPHY: On August 16, 1900, John James Ingalls died. The son of a shoe manufacturer, Ingalls was born in Middleton, Massachusetts, and spent his early years in New England. He graduated from Williams College before joining so many of his generation in the great migration westward. In 1858 he arried in the frontier territory of Kansas, which he made his home. From 1873 to 1891, he represented Kansas in the United States Senate

In her unpublished memoirs,
Laura said, "...Pa and Ma talked sometimes about going to Kansas. Pa's
cousin, John J. Ingalls, had gone to Kansas, but Ma said all he had was an
itching foot." While Pa Ingalls and
Senator John J. Ingalls were cousins, it was a very distant
relationship--their common ancestors were the parents of Edmund and
Francis Ingalls, brothers who had come to the US in 1628. |
