The Last Ship
“The Last Ship” is based on the unknown fate of the Norse Viking colony in Greenland. Before the year 1000 A.D. Erik the Red, father of Leif Erikson, the discoverer of America, was forced away from Iceland as an outlaw so colonized Greenland. In an early marketing effort he named it Greenland to attract settlers. For a time the colony thrived, but as the climate cooled toward the middle of the millennium, and the Viking exploration and settlement era ended, contact with the colony ceased. By the time a ship sailed again from Europe to learn the fate of the Greenland Norse, none remained alive. Their exact fate remains speculative. This story is science fiction. ©1996 D. Season of Marvels
“Season of Marvels” is a dark fantasy based on the Icelandic Viking sagas of the 12th and 13th centuries. It’s written largely in the style of the sagas. This story was a near-miss story with many editors, intriguing them and gathering interesting comments, but–alas–not contracts to purchase it. ©1994 D. A Houdek (Deb Houdek Rule) Continue reading

Viking-Trojan War
“The Viking-Trojan” war is another Viking story, except this one takes place in the present at my alma mater–the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television. It’s a fantasy based on a dream that I had. Like “Season of Marvels” it’s gotten interested reactions from editors, with one acceptance to a magazine that regrettably folded before the story was published. ©1994 D.
