Almanzo James WILDER [Parents] was born 13 Feb 1857 in New York. He died 23 Oct 1949 in Missouri and was buried in Mansfield, Missouri. Almanzo married Laura Elizabeth INGALLS on 25 Aug 1885 in DeSmet, Dakota Territory.

Laura Elizabeth INGALLS [Parents] was born 7 Feb 1867 in Pepin, Wisconsin. She died 10 Feb 1957 in Missouri and was buried in Mansfield, Missouri. Laura married Almanzo James WILDER on 25 Aug 1885 in DeSmet, Dakota Territory.

Claire Gillette LANE was born in Minnesota. He married Rose WILDER on 24 Mar 1909. They divorced by 1920. He remarried but does not appear to have had any children.

Rose's husband has been difficult to search. His birthplace is from the 1930 census, which showed him in Marin County, California, remaried, but no children. I could not find either Gillette or Rose in the 1920 census.

"Ghost in the Little House" by William Holtz (see review) suggested that Gillette had been remarried twice after Rose.

Rose WILDER [Parents] was born 5 Dec 1886 in Dakota Territory. She died 30 Oct 1968 in Connecticut and was buried in Mansfield, Missouri. Rose married Claire Gillette LANE on 24 Mar 1909.

Little House on Rocky Ridge Laura and Almanzo's daughter, born in "The First Four Years" and now subject of her own books series beginning with "Little House on Rocky Ridge." She meets future husband Gillette Lane in the final book in the series.

Rose had a male child that died at birth or in infancy about 1909, possibly a stillbirth or late-term miscarriage, probably in Mansfield, Missouri. She required surgery to recover, which took place in Kansas City, which took her considerable time to recover from, and left her unable to have more children.


Charles Phillip INGALLS [Parents] was born 10 Jan 1836 in Cuba Township, Allegeny Co., New York. He died 8 Jun 1902 in DeSmet, South Dakota and was buried in DeSmet, South Dakota. Charles married Caroline Lake QUINER on 1 Feb 1860 in Concord, Jefferson, Wisconsin.

In 1870 census in Montgomery County, Kansas.

In 1880 census in DeSmet, Kingsbury County, Dakota Territory.

Caroline Lake QUINER [Parents] was born 12 Dec 1839 in Brookfield Township, Waukesha, Wisconsin. She died 20 Apr 1924 in DeSmet, South Dakota and was buried in DeSmet, South Dakota. Caroline married Charles Phillip INGALLS on 1 Feb 1860 in Concord, Jefferson, Wisconsin.

Little House in Brookfield Caroline "Ma" Ingalls, in all Laura's books, and now subject of new books series beginning with "Little House in Brookfield."

Freddie died at the home of Peter and Eliza Ingalls, by the Zumbro River. From there Laura's family moved on to Burr Oak, Iowa.

  F v Grace Pearl INGALLS was born 23 May 1877 and died 10 Nov 1941.

Nathaniel William DOW was born 1859. He died 1943. Nathaniel married Grace Pearl INGALLS on 16 Oct 1901 in DeSmet, South Dakota.

Grace Pearl INGALLS [Parents] was born 23 May 1877 in Burr Oak, Iowa. She died 10 Nov 1941 in DeSmet, South Dakota. Grace married Nathaniel William DOW on 16 Oct 1901 in DeSmet, South Dakota.

Old Town in the Green Groves

Grace was born during a time in Iowa that Laura did not include in her "Little House series of books. The story has been told recently by Cynthia Rylant in Old Town in the Green Groves: Laura Ingalls Wilder's Lost Little House Years (fiction, available from Amazon.com)


Laura wrote in her memoirs, "...I found a new little sister. We named her Grace. Her hair was golden like Mary's and her eyes were blue and bright like Pa's."

 

Grace was a school teacher before she married. She had no children.


David Nevin SWANZEY was born 18 Apr 1854 in St Louis, Missouri. He died 15 Apr 1938 in Keystone, South Dakota. David married Caroline Celestia INGALLS on 1 Aug 1912 in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Caroline Celestia INGALLS [Parents] "Carrie" was born 3 Aug 1870 in Montgomery Co., Kansas. She died 2 Jun 1946 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Carrie married David Nevin SWANZEY on 1 Aug 1912 in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Carrie worked at a newspaper in DeSmet for years, then moved on to the west to homestead her own claim. She had two step-children, but none of her own.


Lansford Whiting INGALLS [Parents] was born 12 Nov 1812 in Dunham, Missisquoi County, Quebec, Canada. He died 21 May 1896 in Burnett County, Wisconsin and was buried in Orange Cemetery, Burnett County, Wisconsin. Lansford married Laura Louisa COLBY on 1830.

Little House in the Big Woods This was Grandpa Ingalls who was chased home by the panther in "Little House in the Big Woods."

In her memoirs, Laura said, "Grandpa Ingalls lived in a log house like ours... There seemed to be nothing but trees for miles all around Grandpas' house..."

Laura Louisa COLBY [Parents] was born 5 Nov 1810 in Whiting, Vermont. She died 18 Oct 1883 in Burnett County, Wisconsin and was buried in Orange Cemetery, Burnett County, Wisconsin. Laura married Lansford Whiting INGALLS on 1830.

Little House in the Big Woods This was Grandma Ingalls of the sugaring off dance in "Little House in the Big Woods."

Laura said, "Her eyes sparkled just like Pa's when he laughed."

Little House in the Big Woods Ruby and sister Docia (Laura Ladocia) are the Aunt Ruby and Aunt Docia that Laura describes in "Little House in the Big Woods" getting ready for the dance at Grandpa Ingalls. "They looked lovely, sailing over the floor so smoothly with the large, round skirts. Their little waists rose up tight and slender in the middle, and their cheeks were red and their eyes bright, under wings of shining sleek hair."

Samuel Worthen INGALLS [Parents] was born 11 Jul 1771 in Sandown, New Hampshire. He died 15 Feb 1841 in Bolivar, New York. Samuel married Margarette DELANO.

Margarette DELANO [Parents] was born 1773 in Tolland, Connecticut. She died 6 May 1837 in North Cuba, New York. Margarette married Samuel Worthen INGALLS.
