Little House in the Big Woods This family is the one who spent Christmas with the Ingalls in "Little House in the Big Woods." Peter was Pa's brother, and Eliza was Ma's sister, making these children and Laura "double cousins."

Little House in the Big Woods

On the Shores of Silver Lake

Uncle George was the one Laura was afraid of in "Little House in the Big Woods" because everyone said he was a 'wild man.' "Uncle George had run away to be a drummer boy in the army, when he was fourteen years old," Laura said. In "Pioneer Girl," her unpublished memoirs, she added, "Afterward Uncle George stole a cow and was arrested... Pa said, What could you expect of a boy who had joined the army when he was fourteen, and lived off the country all those years? In the South, when the Union soldiers wanted anything they just took it, and George had got used to that way of doing. All that was wrong with George was that he couldn't seem to realize the war was over and that he was in the North, where he couldn't live off the country any more."

Civil War service records from Ancestry.com also indicate that George may have deserted the army. The enlistment information matches, but his middle initial is given as "A".

In "On the Shores of Silver Lake" Laura says, "Uncle George was a lumberjack, logging on the Mississippi."

On the Shores of Silver Lake Lena and Eugene are the two cousins Laura rode the black ponies with in "On the Shores of Silver Lake." Their first father had been sent to prison for killing a man who had broken into their home and Laura Ladocia divorced him, remarrying to Hiram Forbes.

In "On the Shores of Silver Lake" Laura identifies them as "Lena and Jean" and says they were Hiram Forbes children, not Docia's; that Hiram was a widower. This does not appear to be correct. The revisions may have been to avoid mention of Docia's divorce. In her memoirs, Laura names them "Lena and Gene," but names Docia as "Docia Holmes."
