"Star Wars" Revised
by D. A. Houdek
It was great seeing the original Star Wars in the theatres again when they spiffed it up and rereleased it, but--really--I think they hurt the movie more than helped it with the changes. All three of the original movies.
I hate what they did to Han Solo. In the cantina scene it the first
one, when he shoots Guido, they changed it so Guido fires first, changing Han's
action into pure self-defense. Totally took the hard, dangerous edge off the
character. Changed him completely.
They did it again in the 3rd movie at the scene where they're putting people
down the desert critter's mouth. When Lando is dangling down and the tentacle
grabs him, Han points the blaster to shoot it. Originally when Lando protested
that Han was blind, Han said, "Trust me." Now he says something inane about
being able to see better. Again they softened the character into mushiness.
Yuck.
It took a while with that new movie (Phantom Menace) to admit to myself that I just didn't like
it at all. It had some very pretty stuff to look at but the story... ugh! Why
did they have to change the Force from something mystical into nothing more than
a virus that infects some people more than others. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Didn't
Highlander's "Planet Zeist" fiasco teach them anything??
